Nigeria Police Withdraw Personnel from VIPs: A New Era of Community Security?

The Nigeria Police Force has begun enforcing President Bola Tinubu’s directive to withdraw police personnel from Very Important Persons (VIPs). This move aims to boost police presence in communities and address the country’s security challenges.

According to reports, the Special Protection Unit (SPU) of the Nigeria Police Force has instructed officers attached to VIPs to return to their bases immediately. The presidential directive, issued on Sunday, mandates that police authorities deploy these officers to concentrate on core police duties.

VIPs who require police protection will now need to request well-armed personnel from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC). The move is expected to free up thousands of officers for deployment to high-risk areas and improve response times to emergencies.

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has criticized the move, describing it as “political theatre” that doesn’t address Nigeria’s deepening security crisis. Meanwhile, some Nigerians welcome the decision, hoping it will lead to improved security in communities.

Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.
