Presidency Denise Tunubu’s Involvement In Opposition Crisis
The Presidency has dismissed claims that President Bola Tinubu is responsible for recent disruptions affecting opposition parties, labeling the accusations as baseless and politically driven.
Speaking on Arise News’Prime Timeon Thursday, Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, firmly denied allegations that Tinubu interfered with opposition activities particularly the coalition formed by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party’s Peter Obi, and others under the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
“There’s a pattern in Nigeria whenever there’s a problem, people blame Tinubu. But he wasn’t even in the country when many of these incidents occurred,” Onanuga said.
Opposition figures recently claimed that venues booked for political meetings were abruptly canceled. Some ADC coalition members reportedly had to walk long distances to avoid a potential security blockade at the Shehu Musa Yaradua Centre in Abuja.
Onanuga rejected any suggestion that the Tinubu administration is stifling dissent. “This government upholds freedom of speech, opinion, and the press. If a hotel cancels a booking, does that mean Tinubu owns it?” he asked.
Addressing the newly emerging opposition alliance, Onanuga downplayed its potential impact. “Atiku has run for president more times than anyone else more than Tinubu, more than Obi and failed each time. Buhari only won after several attempts, and that was with Tinubu’s backing.”
He also questioned the effectiveness of Atiku’s past strategies, saying his reliance on northern sentiment in 2023 failed to gain traction in the South. “Even with Obi as a running mate, there’s no guarantee his 2023 supporters will back the alliance again.”
Onanuga further highlighted Tinubu’s support in the North, citing top government appointments and regional-focused policies.
“The President is doing a lot for the North, his actions show goodwill. People are benefitting, and that support will be vital when the time comes.”
