Veteran Nollywood actor Lere Paimo, also known as Eda Onileola, has passed away at 86.

He was a cultural icon and pioneer of Yoruba cinema, with a career spanning over six decades. Paimo’s breakthrough role came in 1963 with the epic Yoruba film “Ogbori Elemosho,” where he played Soun Ogunola, cementing his status as a cultural titan.

Born on November 19, 1939, in Ogbomoso, Oyo State, Paimo began acting in 1958 with the Oyin Adejobi Theatre Group. He later joined Duro Ladipo’s Theatre Group, where he featured in the stage play “Obamoro” as Chief Basa. Paimo’s contributions to Nigerian film and theatre earned him the national honour of Member of the Federal Republic (MFR) in 2005.

He’s widely regarded for his authentic portrayal of traditional roles, often being mistaken for a real traditional priest. Paimo’s legacy continues to inspire generations of actors and filmmakers.
