Five Nigerians Sentenced to Nearly 160 Years for $17 Million Global Fraud Scheme

A U.S. federal court has sentenced five Nigerian nationals to nearly 160 years in prison for their roles in a transnational fraud scheme that defrauded victims of approximately $17 million. The sentencing, which took place on June 16, 2025, was announced by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Texas following a lengthy investigation under Operation Take Back America.

The fraud network targeted over 100 victims, including individuals, corporations, and government entities across the globe. According to court documents, the scheme operated from 2017 until the defendants’ arrests and employed tactics such as online romance scams, business email compromise, and investor and unemployment insurance fraud. Many victims, including elderly individuals, were left financially devastated.

The convicted individuals include Damilola Kumapayi, 39, sentenced to over 9 years; Sandra Iribhogbe Popnen, 50, sentenced to over 30 years; Edgal Iribhogbe, 51; Chidindu Okeke, 32; and Chiagoziem Okeke, 32 — each sentenced to 40 years. The sentences were handed down by U.S. District Judge Amos L. Mazzant III in Sherman, Texas.

“This syndicate preyed on the vulnerable and exploited trust through elaborate lies,” said FBI Dallas Special Agent in Charge R. Joseph Rothrock. “Their actions robbed victims of life savings.” IRS Criminal Investigation also played a significant role in the probe, with Special Agent Christopher J. Altemus Jr. calling the sentences “a testament to the unwavering resolve” of law enforcement.

The operation involved extensive collaboration between several federal agencies, including the FBI, IRS-Criminal Investigation, Homeland Security Investigations, the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, and the Department of State’s Diplomatic Security Service, among others. Their work uncovered a money laundering network that funneled stolen funds through U.S. banks and transferred proceeds to accounts in Africa and Asia.

Acting U.S. Attorney Jay R. Combs condemned the crimes as “despicable” and vowed continued pursuit of international fraudsters. “These convictions send a clear message: the U.S. justice system will hold accountable those who defraud and exploit,” he said.

Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq on Tuesday flagged off the 65th Annual General Meeting/Conference of the Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (NACCIMA) in Ilorin.

The event began early in the day with a golf tournament at the Ilorin Golf Club, where Governor AbdulRazaq performed the ceremonial tee-off to the applause of many sports lovers.

Several business leaders, investors, captains of industry, key government officials and policy makers from across different states of the country are participating in the key event that will run till Friday.

The theme of this year’s AGM/Conference is ‘Harnessing private sector potential to achieve one trillion dollar economy by 2030’.

The golf tournament was aimed at promoting harmony, unity, love and brotherhood within the premier association.

The closing ceremony on Tuesday evening attracted prominent personalities such as former Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Chief Bayo Ojo; incoming President of NACCIMA, Alhaji Jani Ibrahim; a retired police chief AIG Tunji Alapini; war veteran General Alabi Isama; among others.

Winners of various categories of the tournament were announced and awarded with mouthwatering prizes. Notable are Pro Oluwanishola Ologun (professional category), Golfer Elijah Obioma (ladies category), Lady Captain L.K Jimoh (veteran category). There were also consolation prizes for many other participants.

Earlier in the day, NACCIMA delegates visited four major companies in the state as part of activities marking the first day of the 65th AGM/Conference.

The companies included Kam Steel Integrated Company Limited in Jimba-Oja; TASCON Plastic Industries Limited in Ganmo; International Tobacco Company in Ilorin; and the state-owned Sugar Film Factory Studio, Ilorin.

Delegates were conducted round various sections of each of the companies.

At Kam Steel, the visitors from different parts of the country were in awe of the expansive facility contributing to socioeconomic development in the country.

Speaking on the sidelines of the visit, National Vice President of NACCIMA, Ms Patricia Idiakhoa, said she feels happy to see that a huge steel plant such as Kam Steel is operating in Kwara State, adding that it is noteworthy that they source their raw materials locally.

“It makes us happy. I’m glad that we have such a huge steel company in Kwara State,” she noted.

At the International Tobacco Company, the NACCIMA delegates received a red carpet and warm welcome. They were later shown around the huge facility by its officials.

A royal touch was added to the event as the Ciroma of Ilorin Emirate, Alhaji Abubakar Sulu-Gambari, joined NACCIMA delegates at the ITC amid pomp and pageantry.

Managing Director of the Sugar Film Factory Studio, Mr. Gbenga Titiloye, led delegates to different sections of the studio, while speaking to their operations since establishment under the administration of Governor AbdulRazaq.

For his part, TASCON’s Head of Operations, Mr. Oladimeji Ajado, said it’s a great privilege to have delegates of NACCIMA visit their company.

“Before now, we have had KWACCIMA, CONSCCIMA. This is like the climax for us. We are delighted to host NACCIMA. Our doors are always open to them. We will like to host them more and more,” Ajado said.

The NACCIMA AGM/Conference will be featuring a chain of interesting activities including cultural night, investiture dinner, annual general meeting, exco meeting, conference, among others, for the next few days.

The event is a platform for networking, business discussions, and critical deliberations that will shape the future of industry and commerce in Nigeria.

Emefiele Granted ₦2 Billion Bail

Godwin Emefiele, a former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, was granted ₦2 billion in bail on Monday by a Federal High Court judge sitting in Abuja.

The eight-count charge against Emefiele included allegedly stealing and seizing billions of naira from proxy accounts, as well as illegally obtaining a housing estate with 753 units.

In his ruling, Justice Halilu Yusuf stated that Emefiele had been granted bail in three other criminal cases that were still pending against him and that there was no evidence that he had jumped bail.

Following that, the judge gave Emefiele bail, but only if he could produce two sureties who were the owners of Asokoro, Maitama, or Wuse 2 property that was under the court’s jurisdiction and had a minimum value of ₦2 billion.

He also told Emefiele to turn in his travel documents to the court and that he would be remanded in custody if he didn’t complete the bail by Wednesday.

Emefiele attorney, Matthew Burkaa, filed the bail application, which was granted.

Prosecutor Rotimi Oyedepo did not raise any objections, but he did ask the court to impose special requirements that were different from what the other courts had previously granted.

A major political rift has erupted within the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, following allegations that Vice President Kashim Shettima may be dropped from President Bola Tinubu’s ticket for the 2027 elections.

The meeting, held at the Gombe International Conference Centre, descended into chaos after the APC National Vice Chairman (North-East), Mustapha Salihu, failed to mention the Vice President in his speech endorsing Tinubu for re-election. Angry delegates, chanting “Shettima! Shettima!!”, physically confronted Salihu, forcing him off the stage amid flying chairs and buckets.

The unrest was sparked by fears that Shettima may be excluded from the 2027 joint ticket, despite strong grassroots support for him in the North-East. Several party leaders from Borno and Adamawa states viewed Salihu’s omission as a deliberate move to marginalize the Vice President, prompting some to threaten defection to the opposition if the move proceeds.

Although governors from Yobe, Borno, and Gombe publicly endorsed the Tinubu-Shettima ticket during the meeting, the Gombe Governor’s silence on Shettima’s role raised further suspicion. His vague comments about Tinubu’s leadership, without mentioning the Vice President, led to accusations of a “hidden agenda” from his camp.

The APC National Chairman, Abdullahi Ganduje, attempted to calm the storm but also stopped short of explicitly confirming Shettima’s place on the 2027 ticket.

While acknowledging the North-East’s contributions to the 2023 election, his ambiguous remarks did little to pacify the enraged crowd, some of whom demanded that Shettima’s name be reaffirmed or risk electoral backlash.

Presidency and party officials have since denied any plan to replace the Vice President. Dr. Ijeoma Arodiogbu, APC’s National Vice Chairman (South-East), dismissed the rumours as politically motivated fabrications, asserting that Tinubu and Shettima remain united and constitutionally bound as one ticket.

However, a number of party sources claim that internal discussions are ongoing among power brokers to replace Shettima with a “stronger northern figure” for strategic electoral reasons. Though unconfirmed, such claims have fueled resentment in Borno, Shettima’s home state, where party loyalists insist he must remain on the ticket.

Delegates from Borno have demanded a clear public endorsement of Shettima, calling Salihu’s remarks a “slap in the face” and warning of potential political consequences. While a communiqué affirming support for both Tinubu and Shettima is being prepared, the fallout from the Gombe meeting highlights growing divisions within the party.

As security situation in Benue State continues to deteriorate, the people of the state seem to have lost confidence in the leadership style of the state Governor, Reverend Hyacinth Alia.

In the night of Friday, 13 June, 2025, armed militia invaded Yelewata and Daudu communities in Guma Local Government Area of the state and unleashed unprovoked terror on the residents leaving over 200 people killed including five security agents.

The latest attack has left the residents in more frightened state leading to calls for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to impose state of emergency in the state.

The people have therefore continue to show their anger at the Alia administration.

On Saturday, 14 June, 2025, the Deputy Governor of the state, Sam Ode who was despatched to the affected communities was virtually chased out of the place where mass burial is being conducted for the victims.

“Where is the Governor himself? Is he running away from us? Why is he not here? Maybe he’s running away from us,” a resident of one of the affected communities complained to our correspondent.

The Benue State Commissioner of Police, Emenari Ifeanyi, was on Sunday chased away from the Wurukum Roundabout protest ground in Makurdi by angry youths.

Saolegend.com reports that a crowd of aggrieved protesters had gathered at the area to protest the brutal killing of over 200 residents in Yelewata, Guma Local Government Area.

The protesters, dressed in black and wielding placards, took to the streets to demand justice and immediate action from both the state and federal governments.

Their chants echoed with grief and outrage as they called for an end to the unrelenting attacks by suspected armed herdsmen.

The police commissioner, who arrived at the protest venue with a team of heavily armed officers to address the demonstrators, was met with hostility.

His attempt to speak did not go down well with the enraged youths, who shouted him down and demanded that he “go to Yelewata”, where the massacre occurred, instead of addressing them in the state capital.

Shortly after the commissioner left the scene, police operatives began firing teargas at the protesters, leading to panic and several reported injuries.
