British historian of Yoruba art

William Fagg (a British historian of Yoruba art) took this portrait in Saki, the most Northern city of the Yoruba region, in 1959. Along with Ife, Oshogbo and Ede, Shaki is one of the oldest Yoruba settlements, having been founded in the 15th century by the legendary Yoruba king Ofiran. Next to the clear presence of the three typical lineage scarifications (ila) on the man’s cheeks, is the special hair-do, made up of two rising hair braids connected at the top. Among the Yoruba, persons with privileged roles, such as a king’s messenger (are or ilari) had their heads shaved. The remaining hair was fashioned in a distinctive way in order to identify the person’s powerful position.

The recent surge in kidnappings in Ilorin,

The recent surge in kidnappings in Ilorin, Kwara State, has led to multiple arrests, with some suspects confessing to being part of a larger group. Here are the key developments:

  • Recent Arrests:
    • Eight suspected kidnappers were arrested by the Nigerian army in Ilorin, with two kidnap victims rescued on August 18, 2025.
    • Three notorious kidnappers disguising themselves as bicycle riders were apprehended by the Ilorin South Local Government Council’s security team in July 2025.
    • Local vigilantes also arrested eight suspected kidnappers in Ifelodun Local Government Area in August 2025.
    • Yesterday, August 20, 2 kidnappers were caught, one ran away, and one was arrested – a man dressed like a woman with a bag full of biscuits and suit with a lot of cash.
    • Today, another kidnapper was arrested in the morning around Aruna Kannike House, Ipata market. She was caught by the community and begged them to let her carry out her operation because she was going to collect her salary. She had 3 different ATM cards and was beaten by the crowd before the police arrived.
  • Kidnapper Profiles:
    • Some arrested suspects have confessed to receiving large sums of money for each successful kidnapping operation.
    • A suspect revealed that his team had abducted numerous children for ritual purposes in exchange for large sums of money.
  • Community Response:
    • In some cases, community members have taken matters into their own hands, beating suspects before police arrival.
    • Residents are advised to report suspicious activities to the authorities instead of taking the law into their own hands.
  • Security Measures:
    • The Kwara State Government and security agencies are working to address the situation.
    • The police have urged residents to provide information to aid investigations.

To prevent further kidnappings, parents and guardians should be vigilant and monitor their children’s activities closely. Youths should be cautious of enticing job offers that seem too good to be true, especially those promising huge payments. Residents should report suspicious activities to the nearest police station or local vigilante group. The Kwara State Government needs to take concrete steps to address the rising tide of insecurity.

Gov Abdulrazaq hails President Tinubu over arrest of top terrorists, synergy with state govts

Gov Abdulrazaq hails President Tinubu over arrest of top terrorists, synergy with state govts

•assures residents of efforts to eliminate security threats
•KWASSIP to take inventory, support affected persons: Gov

Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq has commended President Bola Tinubu and security agencies for the recent arrest of top leaders of terrorist groups in the country, calling it a strong indication of the efforts to rid Nigeria of terrorism.

In a statement on Wednesday, the Governor said the arrests of Mahmud Muhammad Usman, the leader of Ansaru, and his deputy Mahmud al-Nigeri, also known as Malam Mahmuda, attested to the extensive intelligence-driven counterterrorism operations of the administration.

“These arrests are a big win for the country. We commend the President, the National Security Adviser, and the leadership of the Nigerian Armed Forces, Army, Air Force, Navy, and the Nigeria Police and other agencies for this feat. On our part, we will continue to support the effort of the President and the security agencies on all fronts,” the Governor said in a statement.

“We are confident that these arrests, along with other efforts at various levels across the country, will stamp out the criminal activities in our communities.

“I again reassure our people that we will continue to work with the security agencies to eliminate threats and maintain security of lives and properties. Our people should rest assured that no resources are being spared to protect them and their properties. I also urge them to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the security forces and other state authorities.

“Nondisclosures or limited disclosure of specific security information or operation is not borne out of inaction or lack of concern. A lot is being done in collaboration with the security agencies, resulting in valuable intelligence gathering and analysis, arrests, and prevention of attacks that could have occurred.

“I, therefore, urge our people to remain alert but calm as renewed efforts are being made to curtail the cowardly activities of the criminals in our hinterlands.

“As more security operatives, including forest guards, are deployed to boost safety in the affected areas, I have also directed KWASSIP to immediately take inventories of persons affected for support. This will be done in collaboration with community leaders for inclusion and accountability.”

China’s Groundbreaking Pregnancy Robot: A New Era in Reproductive Science?

China’s Groundbreaking Pregnancy Robot: A New Era in Reproductive Science?

China is set to revolutionize reproductive science with the unveiling of a humanoid robot equipped with an artificial womb, capable of carrying a fetus from conception to birth. Developed by Guangzhou-based Kaiwa Technology, this innovative robot is slated for launch in 2026 and has sparked both excitement and debate.

Key Features of the Pregnancy Robot

  • Artificial Womb: Embedded in the robot’s abdomen, replicating the uterine environment with synthetic amniotic fluid and nutrient delivery systems.
  • Full-cycle Support: Claims to handle fertilization, implantation, and nine months of gestation.
  • Price Tag: Approximately $14,000, significantly cheaper than conventional surrogacy.

Potential Benefits and Implications

  • Fertility Solutions: Alternative path to parenthood for couples facing infertility, same-sex partners, or women unable to carry pregnancies.
  • Medical Safety: Reduces risks associated with complicated pregnancies.
  • Scientific Research: Offers new insights into fetal development without relying on human surrogacy or animal testing.
  • Ethical and Legal Considerations: Raises questions about parental rights, robot liability, and potential commodification of childbirth.

The Science Behind the Robot

The artificial womb technology replicates the natural gestation process, maintaining temperature and fluid dynamics to simulate natural pregnancy conditions. While similar systems have supported premature animals, Kaiwa’s humanoid robot represents a major leap forward with its interactive, human-like design.

Open Letter to the Governor of Kwara State, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq

An Open Letter to the Governor of Kwara State, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq

By Concerned Citizens

Dear Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq,

We are writing to express deep concerns about the welfare of the people of Kwara State under your leadership. Despite the state’s substantial monthly allocations, citizens continue to struggle with poverty, hunger, and lack of access to basic necessities. The situation is particularly dire in Kwara State, where hunger is rising at an alarming rate, with citizens struggling to make ends meet despite the drop in food commodity prices.

The increment of the level of hunger is a big problem fueling security threats in the state. As hunger continues to soar, desperate individuals may resort to extreme measures to survive, posing a significant risk to the stability of the state. It is imperative that the government takes proactive steps to address the root causes of poverty and hunger.

The Alarming Rate of Hunger

People are dying before their time by hunger every day. This is a tragic reality that is unfolding in our state, and it is our collective responsibility to address it. The government must take immediate action to provide relief to those suffering from hunger and poverty.

Misplaced Priorities

We are concerned that the government is concentrating on bigger projects that are of less concern to the citizens, rather than investing in human capacity development programs. Billions of naira are being awarded to different projects every week, while only meager amounts are allocated to human development. This approach is not only unsustainable but also perpetuates poverty and inequality.

Contract Award Process

Furthermore, we are concerned about the contract award process in the state. Contracts are often awarded to local contractors or businesses through intermediaries, who cut a significant portion of the funds before executing the contract. This practice not only increases the cost of projects but also undermines the potential of local businesses. We urge the government to award contracts directly to local contractors or businesses, without intermediaries, to ensure that the funds are utilized efficiently.

Efficient Utilization of Funds

We also urge the government to ensure that funds are utilized efficiently and for the quality standard of the job. This can be achieved by implementing robust monitoring and evaluation mechanisms, as well as ensuring transparency and accountability in the contract award process.

The Paradox of Poverty Amidst Plenty

Kwara State is not alone in this struggle. Many states in Nigeria are facing similar challenges, with citizens suffering despite the government’s substantial allocations. The situation is further exacerbated by the fact that projects are often awarded to foreign entities, rather than local businesses and taxpayers. This approach not only undermines the potential of local businesses but also perpetuates poverty and dependence on government handouts.

Key Concerns:

  • Poverty Alleviation: The state government’s efforts to alleviate poverty seem inadequate, with many citizens struggling to make ends meet. The poverty rate in Kwara State is alarming, and it’s essential that the government takes proactive steps to address this issue.
  • Project Allocation: It’s disheartening to see projects being awarded to foreign entities rather than local taxpayers and businesses, which could boost the local economy. This approach not only undermines the potential of local businesses but also perpetuates poverty and dependence on government handouts.
  • Civil Servants’ Welfare: The fact that civil servants are not exempt from paying taxes despite the economic hardships raises questions about the government’s priorities. Civil servants are the backbone of the state’s economy, and their welfare should be a top priority.

Recommendations:

  • Prioritize Human Capacity Development: Invest in programs that provide citizens with skills and resources to break the cycle of poverty. This could include vocational training, entrepreneurship programs, and microfinance initiatives.
  • Prioritize Local Content: Award projects directly to local businesses and taxpayers to stimulate economic growth and development. This approach will not only boost the local economy but also create jobs and opportunities for citizens.
  • Support Civil Servants: Consider relief measures for civil servants struggling with the economic situation. This could include tax exemptions, salary increases, or other forms of support.
  • Empower MSMEs: Establish clinics and programs to support micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises, fostering entrepreneurship and job creation. MSMEs are the backbone of any economy, and supporting them will have a positive impact on the state’s economy.

Appreciation and Call to Action

We appreciate the work you have done so far, Governor, and we understand that your vision is to change the look of the state. However, we urge you to also prioritize changing the face of the people, so that they can befit the new look of the state. By investing in the welfare of citizens and implementing policies that benefit the local population, you can create a brighter future for the people of Kwara State.

Sincerely,
Comr. Sulaiman Abdulfatai O.
