Kwara Govt Launches P-CNG Vehicles for Affordable Transport Scheme

The Kwara State Government has launched the operation of the Compressed Nitrogen Gas (CNG) vehicles as part of efforts to promote affordable, reliable and economical transportation to residents of the State.

Performing the official launching at the Ministry of Transportation Headquarters in Ilorin, the Commissioner for Transportation, Hon. Lafia Aliyu Korasabi described the initiative as aligning with the ongoing Federal Government’s Transportation scheme was targeted at providing succour on the financial burden facing the larger population of Nigerians on transportation.

Hon. Korasabi emphasized that the PCNG Initiative, is a pilot programme and a deliberate effort by the Federal Government as directed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to enhance ease of transportation in the entire 36 States of the Federation, thereby mitigating the economic hardship of commuters in Nigeria.

He equally noted that the prompt release of the 20 CNG buses received to kick start the operation, underscored the strides and commitment of Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq to improving the standard of living of citizens through affordable means of transportation.

The Commissioner for transportation, however, urged the transport union leaders in Kwara State to embrace the latest development, saying that the initiative was not intended to undermine or cripple the existing transportation sector, rather the scheme would create a symbiotic competition, giving alternative choices to citizens.

He, however, reeled out some selected locations and states for which the vehicles would be operating, which include, Abuja, Lagos, Ibadan and Niger State. Other areas within the State to be included in the pilot scheme are Lafiagi, Kiama, Patigi, Baruten, Moro, Local Government Areas and Malete Campus axis just for the start of the programme.

On his part, speaking for the Permanent Secretary, the Director, Personnel Finance and Supply of the Ministry, Mallam Tajudeen Onikoko, lauded the initiative and commended the Governor for providing an enabling environment where everyone thrives and implored all transport unions to embrace peace and work in synergy with the CNG operators in order to maintain a harmonious environment.

In his remarks, the State Coordinator for the CNG Station, Mr. Babatunde Gegele, disclosed that the station is presently situated at Odota Ilorin, with 20 CNG Busses as a pilot scheme to support the existing transport sectors, stressed that the scheme will go a long way to fill the vacuum the defunct Kwara Express had left behind, while enhancing the availability of a more reliable and affordable transport that supports all.

Gegele, however, pledged to work in synergy with all the existing transport bodies, stakeholders and law enforcement agencies to maintain strict adherence to the transportation rules and regulations of the State.

The Chairman, Road Transport Employees Association of Nigeria, Kwara State, Alh. AbdulRahman Olayinka Onikijipa, and his counterparts, Chairman, National Union of Road Transport Workers, Alh. AbdulRazaq Ariwoola and Chairman Association of Independent Transporters, Alh. AbdulGaniy Omoola Kasmag, described the programme as laudable and long anticipated, stating that it would boost development in the transportation business, while alleviating the suffering of the masses.

They all affirmed their total support for the initiative, while commending the Governor’s continued strides at improving the living standards of Kwarans.

The occasion had in attendance all the Directors of the Ministry, the Executive Cabinet members, Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Transportation, Hon. It’s Better for Me to Lose My Senatorial Election Than to Allow A Northerner to Be The President – Ortom

Former Governor of Benue State, Samuel Ortom, has reaffirmed his unwavering commitment to Nigeria’s unwritten zoning principle, stating that he was willing to sacrifice his own political ambition to protect the balance of power. Speaking during a recent interview on Channels Television, Ortom declared, “It is better for me to lose my senatorial election than to allow a Northerner to be president.”

Ortom’s comments underscore the deep-rooted belief among some political leaders that power rotation between the North and South remains critical for Nigeria’s unity.

Simbiat Atinuke Abiola: The Quiet Pillar Behind MKO Abiola’s Legacy

Simbiat Atinuke Abiola: The Quiet Pillar Behind MKO Abiola’s Legacy
Simbiat Atinuke Abiola was more than just the first wife of Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola (MKO Abiola)—she was an accomplished industrialist, entrepreneur, mother, and a devout Muslim whose strength and resilience supported one of Nigeria’s most iconic political figures. Though often overshadowed by her husband’s political prominence, Simbiat played a significant role in shaping the Abiola household and contributing to Nigeria’s entrepreneurial landscape.

Early Life and Marriage

Born in the mid-20th century (exact birth date unconfirmed), Simbiat Atinuke became the first wife of MKO Abiola, the renowned businessman, philanthropist, and winner of Nigeria’s annulled 1993 presidential election. The two married in the early days of Abiola’s rise to national prominence, long before he became a household name in politics.
Their marriage was marked by mutual respect, with Simbiat often described as supportive yet principled, maintaining a strong presence within the family even as her husband’s public life grew more demanding.

Entrepreneurial Pursuits

Simbiat Abiola was not content to simply play the role of a political spouse. She was a respected industrialist and entrepreneur, involved in various business ventures during a time when women’s participation in Nigeria’s corporate sector was still relatively limited. Her quiet success in industry contributed not only to her family’s wealth but also to the growing image of Nigerian women as capable business leaders.
Though she largely maintained a private life, she embodied the balance between Islamic values, motherhood, and economic independence, earning the admiration of those within her community.

Family Life and Children

Simbiat and MKO Abiola had five children together, among whom is Kola Abiola, the eldest son. Kola would later play a notable role in efforts to preserve and advance his father’s political legacy, especially after MKO’s incarceration and death.
Simbiat’s role as a mother was foundational—raising her children with discipline, Islamic values, and an awareness of their cultural and national responsibilities. Her influence on the Abiola family was deep and enduring.

Faith and Personal Values

A devout Muslim, Simbiat Atinuke Abiola was known for her strong religious conviction and commitment to Islamic practices. She balanced her spiritual life with her business activities, and her faith informed many of her decisions both in the public and private spheres.
Her dignified and modest lifestyle stood in contrast to the often chaotic political turbulence surrounding the Abiola name, especially in the years leading up to and following the 1993 presidential election.

Legacy and Remembrance

Though not as publicly celebrated as her husband, Simbiat’s legacy remains significant. Her strength, business acumen, and devotion to family provided the stability that allowed MKO Abiola to pursue his ambitions on a national scale. In many ways, she was the silent architect of the Abiola home—a symbol of dignity, resilience, and integrity.
Her death (date not widely documented) was met with tributes from family and community members who remembered her as a woman of quiet influence and profound impact.

Simbiat Atinuke Abiola lived a life of substance behind the scenes of one of Nigeria’s most consequential political narratives. As a wife, mother, businesswoman, and devout Muslim, she represented a generation of Nigerian women who embodied strength without spectacle. Her contribution to the legacy of the Abiola family—and by extension, to Nigeria’s sociopolitical history—deserves recognition and remembrance.

Gunmen Kill NSCDC Officer, Abduct Three Students in Attack on Edo Seminary

Gunmen Kill NSCDC Officer, Abduct Three Students in Attack on Edo Seminary

Gunmen on Wednesday night reportedly attacked the Immaculate Conception Minor Seminary in Ivianokpodi, Agenebode, Etsako East Local Government Area of Edo State, killing a Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) officer and abducting three students.

The attack occurred around 9 p.m., according to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), and has renewed fears over the safety of religious and academic institutions in the state.

Reacting to the incident, the Catholic Diocese of Auchi expressed deep concern, with the Director of Social Communications, Rev. Fr. Peter Egielewa, condemning the assault and calling for swift action to rescue the kidnapped seminarians.

“This is the second time in ten months that the school has been attacked. Ten months ago, a priest was kidnapped. Now, three seminarians have been abducted and a civil defence officer killed,” Egielewa said, adding that a local vigilante also sustained gunshot wounds.

He urged the government to take immediate steps to protect Catholic institutions, saying, “We call on security agencies at the local, state, and federal levels to rise to their responsibilities so that our people can live in peace and safety.”

As of Thursday, the identities of the abducted students had not been released, and no group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Today in 2001: Derico Nwamama was beheaded.

Today in 2001: Derico Nwamama was beheaded.

Okwudili Ndiwe, known as Derico Nwamama, was a notorious criminal who terrorized the South East between the late 90s and early 2000s. He was just 22 years old.

Starting as a street urchin in Onitsha, he graduated to a pickpocket and then became a dreaded criminal. The mere mention of his name sent shivers down the spines of everyone in Igboland.

Derico rose to prominence after he killed his friend Chiejina, a cold-blooded armed robber who ruled the streets of Onitsha at that time. Their friendship began during the famous Umuleri/Aguleri War, but Derico was based in Abuja and only visited the East for robbery operations.

After Chiejina’s death, Derico became the undisputed terror in the land. The entire Anambra State and its environs were in turmoil. Traders in Onitsha couldn’t display their goods in peace, and people slept with one eye open. Derico raided banks in Onitsha, carting away millions of naira. Travelers passing through the state held their breath, expecting him to strike at any time.

According to reports, he killed over 200 people, including 25 police officers. He carried out countless bus robberies and didn’t hesitate to shoot anyone.

After his successful raids, he would boast and declare himself invincible. At some point, he used the town of Umuleri as his hideout.

In December 2000, Derico and his gang attacked a 59-seater luxury bus at the popular Upper Iweka. The bus was about to leave for Lagos. After robbing everyone on board, they decided to kill everybody (only 4 people survived). This incident prompted Governor Mbadinuju to bring in the dreaded Bakassi Boys to help salvage d state and restore normalcy.

On Tuesday, July 3,2001, Derico was on a bus going from Agbor to Onitsha. When the bus reached the Onitsha axis of d Bridge Head, the Bakassi Boys stopped it. Sensing danger, he jumped through the window 2 run away, but before he could escape, a Bakassi member chopped off his head.

Presidency Denise Tunubu’s Involvement In Opposition Crisis

Presidency Denise Tunubu’s Involvement In Opposition Crisis

The Presidency has dismissed claims that President Bola Tinubu is responsible for recent disruptions affecting opposition parties, labeling the accusations as baseless and politically driven.

Speaking on Arise News’Prime Timeon Thursday, Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, firmly denied allegations that Tinubu interfered with opposition activities particularly the coalition formed by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party’s Peter Obi, and others under the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

“There’s a pattern in Nigeria whenever there’s a problem, people blame Tinubu. But he wasn’t even in the country when many of these incidents occurred,” Onanuga said.

Opposition figures recently claimed that venues booked for political meetings were abruptly canceled. Some ADC coalition members reportedly had to walk long distances to avoid a potential security blockade at the Shehu Musa Yaradua Centre in Abuja.

Onanuga rejected any suggestion that the Tinubu administration is stifling dissent. “This government upholds freedom of speech, opinion, and the press. If a hotel cancels a booking, does that mean Tinubu owns it?” he asked.

Addressing the newly emerging opposition alliance, Onanuga downplayed its potential impact. “Atiku has run for president more times than anyone else more than Tinubu, more than Obi and failed each time. Buhari only won after several attempts, and that was with Tinubu’s backing.”

He also questioned the effectiveness of Atiku’s past strategies, saying his reliance on northern sentiment in 2023 failed to gain traction in the South. “Even with Obi as a running mate, there’s no guarantee his 2023 supporters will back the alliance again.”

Onanuga further highlighted Tinubu’s support in the North, citing top government appointments and regional-focused policies.

“The President is doing a lot for the North, his actions show goodwill. People are benefitting, and that support will be vital when the time comes.”
