Millions of Jobs, Zero Qualified People: What’s Really Wrong With Nigerian Youth Employment in 2026

Millions graduate every year in Nigeria. Yet millions of jobs remain empty.
That’s the painful truth we’re not talking about enough.

The CEO of Moniepoint recently said his company has over 5,000 open roles but can’t find people who are actually qualified for them. In the same country where over 75% of youth are unemployed.

Former Minister of Finance, Mrs. Kemi Adeosun, also shared that Aliko Dangote once told her he struggles to find staff to hire in Nigeria. This is in a country where over 70% of youth are either unemployed or underemployed.

So what’s going on?

There are millions of jobs in Nigeria. But they’re only available to those who can actually do the work.

The problem isn’t a lack of opportunities. The problem is that our education system is not preparing young people to take them.

Why Our Education System Is Failing Nigerian Youth

1. Youth Go to School for Certificates, Not Competence
Most students are chasing a degree certificate, not real skills. The goal is “I graduated” instead of “I can solve problems.” Employers don’t pay for certificates. They pay for competency.

2. Innovation and Skills Are Not Practically Taught
Our classrooms are 80% theory and 20% practice. A graduate can explain digital marketing but can’t run a ₦5,000 Facebook ad. A computer science graduate can’t build a simple WhatsApp landing page. That gap is costing us jobs.

3. A Virus is Infecting Our Institutions
Exploitation. Bribery. Sexual harassment. Many students spend years in school fighting distractions that have nothing to do with learning. Instead of graduating with skills, they graduate with trauma and a mindset that “success comes from connection, not competence.”

4. No Culture of Creativity and Ownership
We raise youth to be job seekers, not job creators. The mindset is “Who can I send my CV to?” instead of “What problem can I solve for ₦50,000 this month?” Creativity is punished in school — you must follow the syllabus, not your ideas.

5. Zero Alignment Between School and Industry
Companies are using AI, remote tools, and digital payments in 2026. But many schools are still teaching with textbooks from 2010. There’s no internship culture. No industry mentorship. No practical projects.

The Hard Truth

There are two types of Nigerian youth today:

Type 1: The Money Chaser — Wants quick cash, no skill, no patience. Jumps from one Ponzi scheme to another.
Type 2: The Competent Builder — Focuses on skill, loyalty, and honesty. Wants to create value and build something real.

Guess which type gets hired? Guess which type starts a business that lasts?

The Skill Gap Isn’t Just Technical — It’s Character

Even if you learn the skill, you’ll lose opportunities if you lack humility and discipline. That’s why the smallest habits matter more than the biggest certificates.

Final Word

The jobs are here in 2026. The money is here. The opportunity is here.

But it’s only for those who can do the work and have the character to keep it.

Don’t graduate with a certificate. Graduate with a skill you can sell and a heart that can learn.

Kwara NUT Issues Final Reminder Over Unresolved Demands, Threatens Industrial Action

Kwara NUT Issues Final Reminder Over Unresolved Demands, Threatens Industrial Action

The Kwara State Wing of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has issued a final reminder to the state government over a series of unresolved demands affecting teachers in the state warning that continued silence from government may provoke industrial action.

The warning was contained in a letter by the State NUT addressed to Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrasaq jointly signed by the State Chairman, Comrade Yusuf Wahab Agboola, and Principal Assistant Secretary-General, MONI Mike Modesty Itua, and a copy made available to Sobi FM.

The union said it was compelled to once again draw the attention of Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq to lingering welfare-related issues which, despite numerous appeals and diplomatic engagements, have remained unaddressed.

The Union said one of the major issues is the non-implementation of the 27.5% Teachers Specific Allowance (TSA) for SUBEB and TESCOM teachers with TRCN certification, and 21% TSA for teachers without TRCN certification.

The NUT also accused the government of failing to provide financial backing for the 2023 and 2024 promotions of TESCOM teachers, despite having issued promotion letters to the affected staff.

In addition, the NUT lamented the state government’s refusal to implement the 65-year retirement age or 40 years of service policy for teachers an initiative already adopted by no fewer than 21 other state governments and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Also highlighted were the government’s failure to pay June 2023 stipends to teachers who rendered extra services during a modified work schedule for essential workers, and the exclusion of teachers from the November 2023 N10,000 palliative that was paid to other categories of workers in the state.

The NUT warned that the patience of teachers in the state was becoming “very inelastic,” adding that the government’s inaction could plunge the education sector into an avoidabl

Lagos Employed 1000 New Neighborhood Safety Officers.

The Lagos State Government has employed over 1,000 new officers into the Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps (LNSC) to enhance security across the state.

It says this is part of efforts to modernise and expand the scope of local security infrastructure.Speaking at the 2025 annual ministerial news briefing at Bagauda Kaltho Press Centre in Alausa, Ikeja, Commissioner for Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Relations, Mr. Olugbenga Oyerinde, unveiled the reforms and innovations implemented by LNSC.

He said: “In the past year, we have deepened our reach across communities by recruiting over 1,000 officers.

“This is more than just a number—it reflects our commitment to ensuring every ward in Lagos feels the presence of security and order.”

Oyerinde noted that beyond recruitment, the state had introduced specialised units such as Marine Patrol, Forest Rangers, Human Trafficking and Domestic Violence, Forensics, Crime Scene Management, Paramedics and Crowd Control.

These units, he said, were geared toward professionalising the agency and adapting to evolving security needs across the state. To improve operational efficiency, he said the state government had distributed new patrol bicycles, motorcycles, scooters and vehicles to officers to enable quicker response time.
